SUBVERSIVE ELEMENT

Mobirise

Subversive Element is a soundscape project from Jim Goetsch that has been inspired by dub, an offshoot of reggae that emerged in the '70s characterized by fat beats, bass, extreme use of effects, and an "anything can go in" attitude that creates an audio collage much like a New Orleans kitchen that will throw anything they've got into a gumbo.

So Jim's idea with Subversive Element was to create his own mix of dub that mixes beats, bass, electronic studio music of the '60s, avant garde jazz and  modern  classical. Imagine a jam with Mad Professor, Miles Davis and Karlheinz Stockhausen, and you get some idea where this is going......

While Jim has been performing and recording electronic music in the Los Angeles area since the '90s, he also has a long history as a saxophone player performing in avant garde jazz and classcial settings. This project allows him to bring all this experience together in one spot with his releases "Night Music" and "Road Trip".

Another Subversive Element project is a total improv release entitled " 3  2  14" that was a joint effort with The Stratos Ensemble, led by Dean DeBenedicits. This recording is a true spontaneous composition that was created with virtually no discussion or pre-planning.

Notable past projects by Jim includes Demolition Squad, in which Jim contributed massive beats, bass and electronic sound layers. These were overlapped by avant garde orchestral parts written by virtual orchestra master Kim Koschka along with samples and scratching by DJ Luke Collins.  Their record "Hit It" received a 9 out of 10 rating from Alternative Press.

Jim is currently working on another project, Baker's Brew, which is led by veteran drummer Maury Baker. Maury's goal with the group is to bring together his vast experience that includes work with David Amram, Janis Joplin, Tim Buckley, Frank Zappa and many other notables.  Jim's contributions to this project include performing on processed soprano sax, piano, and synthesizers as well as writing surround sound electronic compositions that the group performs live. Baker's Brew has released the CDs "New Colors" and "New Works" on Goetsch's Psychosomatic Records label as well as five other albums as digital only releases on  Bandcamp
